GREENHOUSES OF THE COASTAL VILLAGES: A TOUR FOR PLANT LOVERS

Saturday, March 24, 2007

10:00 am - 4:00 pm

Registration Information

Join us as the greenhouses of the Coastal Villages welcome the spring season with lush growth and a flourish of color and scent. Shed the winter blues on this self-guided tour of six greenhouses in the Little Compton-Westport area, each possessing its own charm and unique plant collection. This is an opportunity to meet greenhouse growers, discover new species, and learn about both large and small scale greenhouse operations. Whether you are visiting a complex of professional greenhouses or a small residential garden room, this tour is about the plants and the people who grow them.

Peckham’s Greenhouse
With the wisdom of five generations, The Peckham family operates fourteen commercial greenhouses bursting with an array of houseplants, annuals, perennials, and shrubs. Take advantage of special sales and peruse the new spring plants, supplies, and exhibits.

Peckham Road Orangerie
This orangerie began life in the 17th century as a barn and was recently converted into a charming winter garden room. Facing south, it is creatively designed with glass doors and a bluestone and gravel floor. Topiaries, bay laurels, citrus, clivias, cypress, ferns, rosemary, jasmine, gardenia and many other scented specimens are arranged on stands, on a slate well cover, and hang from fanciful Italian ornamental hooks.

Tompkins Lane Lord & Burnham
This 8’ x 10’ custom residential greenhouse contains plants that capture the sights and smells of the owner’s travels to India, Brazil, and the southern United States: Queen of the Night, thunbergias, and sweet olive. Experience the delights that a manageable home greenhouse has to offer.

John Dyer Road Orchid House
Boasting a large collection of rare orchids from South America and New Guinea, this 18’ x 30’ greenhouse showcases the astonishing diversity and adaptations of the Orchidaceae. The owner’s passion for these tiny epiphytes is contagious and the closer you look, the more you will discover.

Windward Way Orchid House
The orchids of this residential greenhouse give a fantastic show of color and pattern, celebrating the work of a dedicated orchid grower. Take advantage of this intimate presentation, pick up valuable tips from the owner, and revel in the elegant forms that surround you.

North Star Farm Greenhouses
This wholesale greenhouse complex opens its doors for a rare glimpse inside, offering visitors special sales on quality groundcovers, grasses, natives, and perennials. Learn about the fascinating history of the greenhouses associated with hydroponic lettuce, explore the propagation room, and gain an insider’s understanding of a supplier’s operation. Hot drinks and light refreshments will be available.

Be sure to stop by Nature Contained  to see special container design demonstrations offered to tour attendees throughout the day!
