Creating Scanner Photography
with artist Ellen Hoverkamp
Friday, August 3
10 am – 1 pm

Inspired by the work of Victorian botanical illustrators and Dutch and Flemish still-life painters, artist Ellen Hoverkamp draws attention to the spectacular beauty of nature and honors the gardeners who create the subject matter for her photography. She has used a flatbed scanner as a camera since 1997, enjoying the dramatically detailed, three-dimensional result of scanning objects at high resolution.

Explore Blithewold’s grounds as Ellen shows you how to collect samples for scanner art. She will then demonstrate how she creates a composition from garden specimens on a flatbed scanner, exploring the creative process as well as the technological components of her art form. She will then will give a visual presentation of her visits to Blithewold and the resulting scanner photography, including her recent work documenting Blithewold’s night-blooming cereus.

Prints, cards, scarves, and books will be available for viewing and for purchase.
Refreshments will be served.
