April Adventure Camp

WHEN: Monday, April 19, 2010 to Friday, April 23, 2010 at 9:00AM - 3:00PM
WHERE: Blithewold Carriage House and Grounds

As with our popular Buds & Blossoms summer camp, Blithewold's April vacation camp for children emphasizes the interaction of plants, animals, humans and the environment. Campers will become detectives, unearthing a new nature mystery each day, through inquiry-based experiments, games, guest speaker presentations, and crafts and activities that span multiple learning styles.

Campers will spend time indoors and outdoors, gaining a deeper understanding of topics such as weather patterns, aquatic habitats, animal adaptations, and the spring awakening of plants.

Daily Schedule:

Water, Water, Everywhere - Monday, April 19

Make a splash at Blithewold as we learn about this important resource. Through the exploration of our frog pond, animal visits and beach combing, campers will learn about important topics such as aquatic life, water uses, and erosion.

Wonders of the World - Tuesday, April 20

This exciting day is devoted to the people, music, art, food, plants and animals from around the world. Join us as we learn about different cultures, write our own myths and folklore, and help "Bristol Stone Soup" to create community awareness posters.

Geology Rocks - Wednesday, April 21

Games, activities, and experiments will make earth science come alive on this camp day. Create fossils, grow crystals, make a volcanoe, play rock and mineral trivia, and more.

Animal Action - Thursday, April 22

Celebrate Earth Day by getting up close and personal with local wildlife. Enjoy a full day of special animal visitors and learn about their unique habitats. Campers will discuss creatures great and small, including such topics as the food chain, adaptations, and predator-prey relationships.

Sky's the Limit - Friday, April 23

This entertaining, yet scientific, day at camp will take you on a journey through space and time. Join us as we explore the outer limits of our solar system, plus enjoy a special live performance in honor of our home planet, Earth.

A Day in the Life of a camper…

“The very first thing the campers did today was head down to the shore to collect shells. We collected samples from the water, looked for crabs and then each camper packed a few shells for a craft activity later in the day. After exploring for over an hour, we headed back to our camp for snack time! Afterwards, it was game time in the Great Lawn... water noodle relay and mosquito tag! After several rounds, we headed back to our crafting headquarters to construct "sand castles" out of recycled cardboard and paper towel rolls. Instead of using glue to put their castle together, they were challenged to make slits and fit the pieces together. Once assembled, the campers painted the castle with glue and poured sand over it for an authentic look! After lunch, Ms. Jillian taught us about different bodies of water, we then made fish mobiles and went exploring in the gardens!
Camp at Blithewold sure is fun! What will we dive into tomorrow?”
