Blithewold is a 33-acre summer estate with grand views of Narragansett Bay and is nationally significant in American history as one of the most fully developed and authentic examples of the Country Place Era. The property features a 45-room mansion filled with family heirlooms, and is framed by a series of lovely gardens that range in character from mysterious to exotic and from poetic to practical. An exceptional collection of rare and unusual plants, specimen trees, an accessible greenhouse, and whimsical stonework project a character that is romantic, fresh, and inspiring – and unique to Blithewold.

Gardener’s Day – Food & Wine

Gardeners' Day 2016 Food & Wine is a not-to-be-missed event! Under Blithewold's tent and Van Wickle Pavilion, enjoy talks by Ellen Ecker Ogden, Author, Gardener, and Designer; Champe Speidel, Co-Owner and Chef at Persimmon; Jamie Purviance, Chef and Author; John Nunes, Owner and Vintner at Newport Vineyards.

Afterwards, join us for a seasonal, fresh-from-the-garden dinner, along with a paired wine tasting by Newport Vineyards. A raffle benefitting Blithewold's educational programs, a plant and book sale, vendors and food samples and wine tasting round out the evening's festivities. Rain or shine. Register early as this event will sell-out.

Stephen Procter Sanctuaries and Destinations: Clay Vessels in the Garden

June 4 – October 10
Blithewold welcomes the bold lines and generous volumes of Stephen Procter’s handmade ceramic vessels to Blithewold. Procter will be creating almost 20 vessels for Blithewold, which will stand harmoniously in the gardens throughout the estate.

Afternoon Tea in the Dining Room

Afternoon Tea is available at both 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm Tuesday – Friday from November 25 until December 30.
The Dining Room at Blithewold has always been a place where fine meals have been served to cherished guests. Today friends gather and exchange stories while delighting in a cup of tea, freshly baked scones with sweet cream, and a
3-tiered tray filled with sweet and savory treats. Simply luxurious!

The Van Wickle family hosted many parties and celebrations at Blithewold. One of the most notable celebrations was Marjorie Van Wickle and George Lyon’s wedding, which took place on June 1, 1914, in an elegant outdoor ceremony in Blithewold’s Enclosed Garden.
