E- Lecture:
University in the Garden: Blithewold’s Coastal Future as Environmental Design Inquiry
Wednesday, May 20
4 PM

Blithewold’s coastline is expected to go through significant degradation over the next 30 to 80 years. This prediction is based on recent climate change research that presents many warnings, but no clear solutions. How much of the coastline and the Great Lawn will be lost? How can we preserve history when loss seems inevitable? Is it possible to make changes today that will benefit and prepare it for the future?

This presentation shares information about the impact of sea-level rise on Blithewold’s landscape as well as design projects by Roger Williams University student that responds to these challenges. This study was part of a seminar course on landscape architecture as well as a larger design-research study led by Professor Leonard Yui. Design students were tasked over the semester to research and investigate using Blithewold’s landscape and members as a pedagogical device to better understand the severity and impact of climate change on the site. Students were then tasked to design a response that preserved historical intentions while converting the danger of climate change into an opportunity to improve the current coastline.

This E-Lecture is a 30 min keynote presentation plus questions and answers afterward.
